Traditionally, the martial arts community believed that engaging in weight training was detrimental to the performance of the art, that it would hinder one's flexibility, speed, and agility. To be effective fighters, martial artists had to be quick and light on their feet like Bruce Lee and other slim and small, but powerful fighters. They maintained that karate was all about good techniques and proper timing and that muscle size has little to do with it. After all, the art of self-defence lies in the premise that smaller, weaker people can defend themselves effectively against larger, stronger opponents. While it's true good technique and proper timing are essential, there's no reaon to believe that muscular fitness will hinder a martial artist's effectiveness. In fact, just the opposite is true: with increased strength comes the enhanced ability to defend oneself. A well-designed weight-training routine-in addition to regular martial arts practice-will make practitioners stronger, not slower. In some cases, it can even improve their speed. In this book, veteran martial artist and fitness expert Mikhail Krupnik shows readers how to design a weight-training program to fit their individual needs and goals. I must start off this review by clearly stating that there really isn't any new information provided in this book and that information that is provided is fairly basic and can be found in many other books. However, the author did a very nice job of presenting the material in this book and the illustrations were quite clear and easy to see and understand.

There were no photos in this book and I often find that a distraction as I believe it is imperative to have good quality photographs in a book where you are attempting to teach a physical technique. Sometimes, although rarely, good quality illustrations can actually surpass photographs in this respect. That isn't the case here, although like I said earlier the illustrations were nicely done.

There aren't a wide variety of exercises demonstrated and the information that is provided is rather basic and I didn't read anything that would constitute a remarkable gem of wisdom, but the information provided is sound.

I wouldn't disregard this book by any means, and if you want a very basic guide for getting into shape, then this book would serve its purpose as a basic guide. However, if you want more detailed information, there are much better books out there. Here are a couple of examples:
