Wow! I am a bit surprised with McGraw Hill Publishing Company. They used to possess a higher standard for publishing quality than what this offering demonstrates.
And Joe Rogan's Foreword was magnificant hype for his friend and author: Eddie Bravo. Unfortunately, Mr. Rogan may be an experienced NBC "reality show" host and commentator for MMA competitions, but a Martial Arts Historian he is not.
Mr. Rogan's written account in the Foreword trumps up Mr. Bravo as some sort of creative martial arts "phenom." Okay then! Jigaro Kano was a phenom. Dan Gable was a phenom. Donn Draeger was a phenom. Jon Blum was a phenom. Eddie Bravo is a mere MTV flavor of the month, kind of like the entire Brazilian Jiu Jitsu movement, which is nothing more than a well marketed, highly specialized Judo.
As far as the contents of the book are concerned, there is nothing phenominal about Eddie Bravo's material except for his colorful terminology. The photos are very poor quality, incomplete black and whites, that leave a lot to be presumed, in regards to what actually is going on with the movements. The written descriptions of the photographed techniques are of enough detail to figure out what's going on, but there is nothing new here (or in any of the numerous Brazilian Jiu Jitu manuals offered on Amazon. After Donn Draeger was too "banged up" from standing Judo, he was performing power house ground grappling long before Rorian Gracie did such a fabulous job of marketing his family's highly specialized judo ne-waza to the naive G.Q. American public).
What Mr. Bravo has done is create an interesting meshing of very basic wrestling with his unique flexibility and some fundamental ne-waza (ground applications). Too bad McGraw-Hill packaged it so poorly.
If a reader can learn one new thing from any text, any book under $50.00 was worth the purchase. Is this book information rich with new material? Depends on the reader's background. The absolute value of this book is about a 2. I learned one new thing from it, so it was worth my personal expense.
Would I recommend this book for purchase? Depends on what you want? Hey, I bought it because I was curious...so it doesn't matter to the publishing company and author as long as I give them my money, right?!
This book contains material for those who are uniquely flexible with a wrestling back ground who might want to understand some creative ways for changing a position of disadvantage to a position of advantage when rolling around the ground without a judo gi, seeking submissions on the adversary.
At best, it is a highly specific, but very tattered view of ground grappling.

i was impressed with the book and illustrations. I practice with a Gi but enjoy using the "lock up" and moves that dont use grabbing the uniform. I will buy the other books soon. the only drawback I can see is if you are not flexible some of the moves will be impossible to pull off.

This book is awesome. I have many Jiu-jitsu books. This book is revolutionary. The thing I love the most about it is how the thought process of each move was explained. Like why you move from one step to the next. It is not simply writen explinations of what you are doing. It is definatly not for the beginner but it will take any other level of player to the next level up. I recomend this book to anyone who has atleast more than 6 months of BJJ. Anyone who is trying to train for reality self-defense or nogi BJJ NEEDS this book. I disagree with the person who says that training with a gi is good for street fighting because "someone on the street will probably have a shirt on." That is b.s. When you train for a fight you don't train for "probably" or "most of the time". You train for worst case scenarios which would be fighting nogi. Anyone with BJJ experience can be taught to perform a collar choke in about half a minute. So skip the gi and go with nogi. You will thank yourself later when you choke someone out who's shirt ripped off in the fight!

Great book. I loved it. I have been able to use most of the techniques in the book to obtain submissions during my roll time.
